Unlocking Accelerated Learning: The Power of Teaching

February 10th, 2024

In our quest for personal and professional development, the approach we take to learning can significantly impact the depth of our understanding and the speed at which we master new skills. A strategy that stands out for its effectiveness is learning with the intention of teaching. When we learn something with the goal of teaching it to someone else, we engage with the material on a deeper level, leading to a more profound and lasting grasp of the subject.

Why Does This Approach Work?

  1. Enhanced Engagement: Preparing to teach forces us to engage more thoroughly with the material. We actively seek to understand concepts fully, anticipate questions, and think critically about the subject matter, enhancing our own comprehension in the process.
  2. Better Organization: Teaching requires that we organize information logically so it can be easily understood by others. This organization helps solidify our own understanding and makes recall more accessible.
  3. Identifying Gaps: In preparing to explain a concept to someone else, we quickly identify any gaps in our own knowledge. This recognition prompts further research and learning, strengthening our mastery of the subject.
  4. Improved Memory Retention: The process of teaching others requires us to recall information more frequently, reinforcing our memory. The use of metaphors, examples, and stories to explain concepts to others also aids in making the learning more memorable for us.
  5. Enhanced Communication Skills: Learning to teach hones our communication skills, making us more effective in presenting complex ideas in simpler terms. This skill is invaluable in any professional setting, where clarity and brevity are prized.

Applying This Approach in Your Professional Journey

Whether you’re learning a new software, mastering a skill, or diving into a complex project, approach it with the mindset of teaching it to someone else. This could mean leading a workshop, writing a blog post, or simply explaining the concept to a colleague. The act of preparing to teach will elevate your understanding, cement your knowledge, and potentially benefit others in your network.

By embracing the power of teaching as a learning tool, we not only accelerate our own growth but also contribute to the development of those around us. Let’s harness this approach to unlock our full potential and foster a culture of continuous learning and sharing.

Whats Diwali, a quick history :)

November 13th, 2012

A young second generation Indian in the US was asked by his mother to explain the significance of “Diwali” to his younger brother, this is how he went about it…

“So, like this dude had, like, a big cool kingdom and people liked him.
But, like, his step-mom, or something, was kind of a bitch, and she forced her husband to, like, send this cool-dude, he was Ram, to some national forest or something… Since he was going, for like, something like more than 10 years or so.. he decided to get his wife and his bro along… you know… so that they could all chill out together.

But dude, the forest was reeeeal scary shit… really man… they had monkeys and devils and shit like that. But this dude, Ram, kicked ass with darts and bows and arrows… so it was fine. But then some bad gangsta boys, some jerk called Ravan, picks up his babe (Sita) and lures her away to his hood. And boy, was our man, and also his bro, Laxman, pissed… And you don’t piss this son-of-a-gun cuz, he just kicks ass and like… all the gods were with him… So anyways,> you don’t mess with gods.

So, Ram, and his bro get an army of monkeys…Dude, don’t ask me how they trained the damn monkeys… just go along with me, ok… So, Ram, Lax and their monkeys whip this gangsta’s ass in his own hood. Anyways, by this time, their time’s up in the forest… and anyways… it gets kinda boring, you know… no TV or malls or shit like that. So,they decided to hitch a ride back home… and when the people realize that our dude, his bro and the wife are back home… they thought, well, you know, at least they deserve something nice… and they didn’t have any bars or clubs in those days… so they couldn’t take them out for a drink, so they, like, decided to smoke and shit… and since they also had some lamps, they lit the lamps also… so it was pretty cooool… you know with all those fireworks…

Really, they even had some local band play along with the fireworks… and you know, what, dude, that was the very first, no kidding…, that was the very first music-synchronized fireworks… you know, like the 4th of July stuff, but just, more cooler and stuff, you know. And, so dude, that was how, like, this festival started.”

Troubleshooting Mails going to spam.

February 5th, 2012
Troubleshooting Tips for Mails going to spam.
a. make sure your sender domain is registered with major email providers (like yahoo, hotmail, gmail etc)
Then get a list of people who are receiving your emails tagged as spam.
  1. Make a separate mailing list of these users only.
  2. Send the same email to them that was tagged as spam, but this is the way you will do it.
  3. Send it without a body, but only Subject intact – check if it goes to spam.
  4. Keep repeating this exercise by adding one paragraph at a time and keep sending the email.
  5. At one-point in time, the email will go into spam and the last paragraph you added is probably suspect.
  6. Don’t stop. Remove the paragraph and keep adding the remaining paragraphs until you have finished the entire body. There could be multiple paragraphs.
  7. This will for sure highlight where the area of spam tagging lies and then you can work on that.
  8. To be 100% sure it is that specific paragraph, send the email again with only the suspect paragraph and it should be tagged as spam. In this test, you will know beyond a reasonable doubt – that it is the suspect paragraph that is causing this.
